• As Massachusetts makes changes to the laws regulating Accessory Dwelling Units, local towns are left to align their own bylaws, including Needham. The state’s efforts to ease the housing crisis in Massachusetts has been most visible through the struggles towns and cities have been going through in order to comply with the MBTA Communities Law. There are other state initiatives that are underway, however. Beacon Hill has been drafting changes to the rules regarding Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs, and are readying to adopt new legislation in the upcoming months. These changes make ADUs easier to build, by limiting what towns and cities can do to restrict them. Needham’s Planning Board is working with Town Counsel to keep in step with these changes and plans to adapt town bylaws this fall.
