• Town Meeting members voted on zoning related to the MBTA Community Act, which requires multi-family housing permitting by right near public transit. For the town, it was a heavy lift. In order to comply with Massachusetts law, it had to create opportunities for increased housing within a specific distance of public transportation. Over the course of more than a year, it worked to create two plans, one which just met the requirements of the law, and one that went a great deal beyond it. At the October Special Town Meeting, many were surprised when the more ambitious of the two plans was adopted. Municipal Producer Yuxiao Yuan traces how it happens, and explains that the effort is not quite done, despite the outcome.
