• In a battle of top 10 ranked teams in the state, Needham made quick work of the Red Raiders.
Just over a week ago, the Needham Boys Volleyball team completed an incredible comeback, beating Milford in five sets after losing the first two. On Friday night, in front of a live Needham Channel TV broadcast, the Rockets took out another of the top teams in the MIAA Division 1 rankings, Lowell, sweeping them in three straight sets.
Head Coach Dave Powell’s team charged in front in the first set, rolling to a 25-10 victory, then won the second 25-18 and the third 25-19 to send the Red Raiders home with just their second loss of the season. The updated MIAA rankings were released on Friday morning, and Lowell, at 10-1, was ranked at #8. The only other loss Lowell has was at Andover on April 12th, when they fell 3-1.
The Rockets are ranked #1, with Natick #2, Winchester #3, Milford still #4 despite two more losses after the one in Needham. The Rockets improved to 11-1 on the season, with their only loss so far at Newton North. The Rockets will look for revenge against the Tigers on Tuesday, May 14th, when they host their Bay State Conference Rivals.
Newton North (8-2) fell to #6 in the rankings, having fallen to both Natick and Brookline. Needham has swept each of its last four opponents after the Milford comeback, with wins over Framingham, Weymouth and Walpole before the Lowell win on Friday. The rest of the top 1o in the MIAA Division 1 rankings are Methuen at #5, BC High #7, Brookline at #9 and New Bedford at #10.
The three time defending MIAA Division 1 State Champion Rockets will head to Wellesley on Tuesday, May 7th, before coming home again to host Wayland at the A Gym on Wednesday, May 8th.
